Job Title: Assistant Controller - Life Insurance (CPA Required)

Role Overview
A well-established life insurance organization is seeking a highly experienced CPA‑certified Assistant Controller with deep expertise in life insurance accounting. This role supports both Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and GAAP reporting in a highly regulated environment and plays a key role in ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness across all financial and regulatory reporting.
This position serves as a subject‑matter expert in life insurance accounting, partnering closely with internal leadership, auditors, and regulators. The ideal candidate brings a hands‑on leadership style, strong technical judgment, and extensive experience navigating complex statutory reporting and audits specific to life insurance operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the monthly and quarterly close processes for a life insurance entity, supporting both GAAP and SAP reporting.
- Ensure compliance with life insurance statutory accounting requirements, including preparation of regulatory filings and disclosures.
- Monitor and implement new accounting standards and regulatory changes impacting life insurance entities.
- Analyze financial results and explain key drivers specific to life insurance operations.
- Develop and manage short‑term cash flow and liquidity forecasts to support insurance operations and investment activity.
- Ensure consistency and accuracy across SAP and GAAP financial schedules and footnote disclosures.
- Serve as a primary liaison for external auditors and regulatory examinations, coordinating audits and responding to inquiries.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.
- Partner with the Controller to strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and governance frameworks.
- Support special reporting initiatives, ad‑hoc analysis, and regulatory projects as needed.
Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting (required)
- CPA certification (required)
Experience
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience within the life insurance industry
- Direct, hands‑on responsibility for GAAP and SAP reporting in a life insurance environment
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing accounting teams and close processes in a regulated setting
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Expert‑level knowledge of life insurance statutory and GAAP accounting, including statutory guidance and audited statutory financial statements
- Strong understanding of insurance regulatory reporting and examination requirements
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., Pivot Tables, lookup functions, analytical modeling)
- Experience with enterprise general ledger and forecasting/reporting tools (e.g., INFOR, Prophix, or similar platforms)
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a compliance‑driven environment
