Controller
Company Summary: We are currently partnered with a top-tier engineering and consulting firm seeking to add a Controller to their leadership team in Charlotte. This is a high-impact role where you'll work directly with the CEO and CFO to oversee core accounting functions, drive financial integrity, and support strategic growth initiatives across the firm.
Controller Responsibilities:
As Controller, you'll gain hands-on experience in managing the full accounting cycle-including general ledger oversight, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance-while helping shape scalable systems that support the firm's multidisciplinary operations. You'll play a key role in:
Leading month-end and year-end close processes
Implementing internal controls and audit readiness
Supporting project-based accounting and cost tracking for engineering engagements
Enhancing financial systems and reporting tools to improve visibility and decision-making
Collaborating with cross-functional teams to align financial operations with business goals
Controller Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or a related field
CPA or CMA certification strongly preferred
Advanced degree (MBA or Master's in Accounting) is a plus
Technical Expertise
Proven experience in cost accounting, including job costing, variance analysis, and cost allocation
Deep understanding of construction project accounting, including WIP schedules, billing cycles, and retention tracking
Familiarity with GAAP and construction-specific accounting standards
Proficiency in accounting software such as Microsoft Dynamics.
Strong Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and financial modeling
Industry Experience:
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within commercial construction, engineering, or project-based industries
Experience managing budgets for large-scale projects ($500K-$100MM+)
Knowledge of contract management, change orders, and cost-to-complete forecasting
Exposure to project controls, including collaboration with PMs and estimators
