Company Summary: We are currently partnered with a top-tier engineering and consulting firm seeking to add a Controller to their leadership team in Charlotte. This is a high-impact role where you'll work directly with the CEO and CFO to oversee core accounting functions, drive financial integrity, and support strategic growth initiatives across the firm.

Controller Responsibilities:

As Controller, you'll gain hands-on experience in managing the full accounting cycle-including general ledger oversight, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance-while helping shape scalable systems that support the firm's multidisciplinary operations. You'll play a key role in:

  • Leading month-end and year-end close processes

  • Implementing internal controls and audit readiness

  • Supporting project-based accounting and cost tracking for engineering engagements

  • Enhancing financial systems and reporting tools to improve visibility and decision-making

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to align financial operations with business goals

Controller Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or a related field

  • CPA or CMA certification strongly preferred

  • Advanced degree (MBA or Master's in Accounting) is a plus

Technical Expertise

  • Proven experience in cost accounting, including job costing, variance analysis, and cost allocation

  • Deep understanding of construction project accounting, including WIP schedules, billing cycles, and retention tracking

  • Familiarity with GAAP and construction-specific accounting standards

  • Proficiency in accounting software such as Microsoft Dynamics.

  • Strong Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and financial modeling

Industry Experience:

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within commercial construction, engineering, or project-based industries

  • Experience managing budgets for large-scale projects ($500K-$100MM+)

  • Knowledge of contract management, change orders, and cost-to-complete forecasting

  • Exposure to project controls, including collaboration with PMs and estimators
