About the Role
As an E&S Field Underwriter, you will be responsible for driving new business growth and maintaining profitable relationships with wholesale broker partners throughout Southern California. This is a front‑facing role that blends technical underwriting with relationship management, strategic territory development, and market intelligence.
You will manage a broad E&S portfolio within your authority, collaborating with underwriters and leadership to ensure competitive, thoughtful, and sustainable underwriting decisions. Expect frequent travel to broker offices, industry events, and market meetings. The position provides high visibility across the organization and the chance to shape how the regional book evolves.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, grow, and manage a profitable book of E&S P&C business across Southern California
- Cultivate strong, ongoing relationships with wholesale brokers and distribution partners
- Conduct in-person broker visits, including business development meetings, market presentations, and stewardship discussions
- Evaluate, price, and negotiate new and renewal submissions within delegated authority
- Identify market opportunities and gaps, adjusting underwriting strategies to stay competitive
- Partner with internal underwriting, product, and actuarial teams to support strong risk selection and portfolio performance
- Maintain deep knowledge of E&S market conditions, emerging risks, competitive dynamics, and regulatory developments
- Represent the company at conferences, industry functions, and networking events
- Provide feedback and insight into product needs, coverage trends, and appetite refinement
What You Bring to the Table
- 5+ years of underwriting experience, with significant focus on E&S risks
- E&S underwriting experience is a strict requirement
- Strong technical underwriting judgment and comfort navigating non-admitted, specialty, and distressed risks
- Demonstrated success managing and growing a regional broker network
- Experience working in a field underwriting or highly client-facing underwriting role is strongly preferred
- Ability to make informed decisions quickly, balance growth with profitability, and operate effectively with autonomy
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship‑building skills
- Self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership, discipline, and accountability
- Based in Southern California with willingness to travel regionally as required
