Vice President of Underwriting
Our client is a fast-growing Insurtech company transforming commercial real estate insurance-starting with the self-storage sector. By integrating distribution, underwriting, and reinsurance under one roof, we're streamlining the insurance process to deliver faster, more cost-effective solutions.
We're seeking a strategic and hands-on leader to head our client's underwriting and reinsurance operations as VP, Underwriting and Reinsurance. We are looking for a seasoned underwriting professional with a sharp analytical mind and a collaborative leadership style to shape the risk strategy, lead a high-performing team, and drive innovation across our client's insurance offerings.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and mentor a team of underwriters, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.
- Strategic Risk Management - Analyze complex risks to develop pricing and coverage strategies that balance growth and stability.
- Work closely with Sales, Operations, and Product teams to align underwriting with business goals.
- Stay ahead of industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging risks.
- Innovate & optimize workflow - Design and implement scalable underwriting policies, tools, and workflows.
- Maintain regulatory standards and audit-ready documentation across all jurisdictions.
Qualifications
- 10+ years in commercial P&C insurance or 7+ years in property underwriting
- Surplus lines experience preferred
- Deep knowledge of risk assessment, pricing models, and coverage structures
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
- Proven leadership with a proactive, team-oriented approach
- Familiarity with state-by-state regulatory requirements
- Willingness to work from a downtown Austin office (hybrid or in-person)
