Retirement Plan Consultant
Position Overview
This role supports retirement plan sponsors and financial professionals by providing expertise in compliance, plan design, and government reporting requirements. The consultant serves as the primary contact for client accounts, handling communications and meetings via phone or in person. This position requires a deep understanding of plan operations, including annual testing, Form 5500 preparation, loan and distribution processing, and compliance documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver responsive, high-quality customer service with effective problem-solving and resolution
Communicate clearly and professionally in both written and verbal formats
Guide and mentor junior staff while collaborating to meet client and internal objectives
Advise clients on initial and ongoing plan design, helping them navigate regulatory requirements and maintain compliance
Support clients in meeting deadlines established by the IRS and Department of Labor
Facilitate plan terminations, mergers, or conversions as required
Stay informed on current and emerging ERISA regulations through ongoing training and research
Assist with payroll integration and processing in relation to plan administration
Prepare and review annual valuation reports, participant statements, and required compliance tests (e.g., ADP/ACP, Top Heavy, 401(a)(4), 402(g))
Coordinate and ensure accurate processing of plan distributions
Prepare and file Form 5500 in collaboration with plan sponsors
Assist with both routine and regulatory audits (IRS/DOL) when necessary
Work with internal and external partners to manage client onboarding and plan conversions
Provide oversight to team members assisting with plan administration
Handle additional projects and duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor's degree preferred
3-5+ years of experience in retirement plan administration and ERISA compliance
Proven financial data analysis experience
Familiarity with administration platforms (e.g., FTW) is a plus but not required
Knowledge of pooled employer plans (PEPs) and 3(16) fiduciary services is beneficial
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Analytical mindset with attention to detail and prioritization abilities
Capable of supervising and coordinating with support staff to ensure accurate plan servicing
