Senior Technical Manager - Investment Data & Platform Engineering
Overview
We are hiring a Senior Manager to lead the data and analytics backbone of a mission‑critical investment platform supporting portfolio construction, risk, and quantitative analytics. This is a hands‑on technical leadership role for someone who combines deep financial domain expertise with strong data architecture and engineering judgement.
This role sits close to the investment process and is ideal for someone who understands how financial and risk data is produced, transformed, and consumed. Can explain why the numbers behave the way they do, not just deliver them.
What You'll Be Responsible For
- Own the data and ETL architecture powering a large‑scale investment analytics platform
- Lead and mentor a small team (initially 1-3 engineers/analysts) while remaining hands‑on
- Design and maintain robust pipelines handling very large data volumes (~25TB/day)
- Make architectural decisions around where data lives, how it's stored, and how it's accessed
- Work extensively with financial, risk, and time‑series data from vendors such as Bloomberg and Morningstar
- Partner closely with investment, research, and analytics stakeholders to answer complex risk and performance questions
- Provide system and infrastructure oversight, including performance, reliability, and monitoring
- Establish and maintain development and architecture standards to ensure stability and scalability
- Leverage AI‑assisted development tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot) while ensuring generated code aligns with existing codebases and engineering best practices
What We're Looking For:
Deep Financial Domain Expertise (Critical)
- Strong background in asset management, hedge funds, quantitative investing, or risk analytics
- Deep understanding of risk data, portfolio analytics, and financial computation
- Ability to explain discrepancies in risk or analytics outputs and trace issues through the data
- CFA, FRM, or similar credentials are highly attractive (not mandatory)
Data & Technical Expertise
- Extensive experience owning data platforms and ETL pipelines
- Strong knowledge of:
- Postgres
- Parquet
- Redis
- Proven experience working with large, complex, analytical data environments
- Strong system design skills across data storage, compute, and access patterns
- Comfortable overseeing infrastructure and cloud‑based systems (cloud‑agnostic mindset)
Leadership & Mindset
- 3-5+ years of experience leading technical teams
- A tech lead first, manager second mindset
- Comfortable being hands‑on while setting technical direction
- Experience operating in fast‑paced, high‑pressure investment environments
- Disciplined approach to engineering quality, reliability, and development standards
