Workers' Compensation Underwriting Manager - New Business
Our client is a successful MGA founded over 25 years ago, seeking an experienced Workers' Compensation underwriting leader to manage and grow their New Business team. This role is responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day underwriting operations, developing a high‑performing team, and strengthening our multi‑carrier underwriting platform. You'll partner closely with internal stakeholders and carrier partners to deliver consistent, high‑quality underwriting results and support continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, and mentor the New Business Underwriting team, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and high‑performance culture.
- Provide ongoing technical guidance, regular performance feedback, and support professional development.
- Manage daily workflow, workload distribution, and service level expectations.
- Serve as the team's representative in cross‑department discussions and align priorities with leadership.
Underwriting Oversight
- Oversee new business Workers' Compensation underwriting across multiple carriers, ensuring compliance with underwriting guidelines, appetite, and established workflows.
- Act as the escalation point for complex submissions, exceptions, and agent or partner inquiries.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with carrier partners, collaborating on underwriting strategy and appetite alignment.
Operational Excellence
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, processes, and system utilization.
- Monitor service level agreements, quality metrics, and underwriting outcomes.
- Partner with internal teams to identify bottlenecks and support automation or system enhancements.
- Ensure compliance with carrier requirements, underwriting authority, and regulatory standards.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Product, IT, Operations, and other teams to resolve issues and support new initiatives.
- Partner with Business Development and Carrier Relations to support growth strategies and align on carrier expectations.
- Participate in carrier audits, reviews, and performance discussions.
Reporting & Analytics
- Track and report on underwriting productivity, quality, and performance metrics.
- Analyze trends to identify training needs and process improvement opportunities.
- Provide data‑driven insights and recommendations to leadership.
Qualifications
Required
- 5+ years of Workers' Compensation underwriting experience.
- Prior people leadership experience (team lead, supervisor, or manager).
- Strong working knowledge of WC class codes, rating, appetite, and underwriting best practices.
- Experience navigating multiple carrier guidelines, systems, and workflows.
- Proven success driving process improvements or supporting operational change.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with internal partners, agents, and carriers.
Preferred
- Experience in an MGA or program administrator setting.
- Experience managing remote or distributed teams.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
