Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Health & Welfare Consultant to support and lead consulting engagements within the Taft‑Hartley (multi‑employer) market. This individual will serve as a strategic advisor to Boards of Trustees and plan administrators, delivering guidance on benefit strategy, plan design, vendor management, compliance, and financial stewardship for large union benefit funds. The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of multi‑employer fund operations, strong client‑facing abilities, and the technical understanding required to support complex Health & Welfare plan needs.
Key Responsibilities
Client Consulting & Strategy
- Serve as a primary consultant to multi‑employer Health & Welfare funds, advising Trustees, union leadership, and fund administrators.
- Provide strategic recommendations on plan design, cost containment, funding considerations, and long‑term benefits strategy.
- Interpret claims experience, financial reporting, and actuarial analysis to guide decision‑making.
- Present findings and recommendations at quarterly board meetings and special committee sessions.
Technical & Plan Expertise
- Lead or support annual renewals, financial projections, contribution modeling, and plan benchmarking for Taft‑Hartley clients.
- Oversee vendor performance and relationships, including medical, pharmacy, dental, vision, stop‑loss, EAP, TPA services, and specialty programs.
- Review plan documents, SPDs, amendments, and compliance notices for accuracy and regulatory adherence.
- Monitor emerging trends, legislation, and regulatory updates impacting multi‑employer health funds-including ACA requirements, mental health parity, and DOL guidance.
Client Delivery & Project Management
- Manage day‑to‑day client work, deliverables, and project timelines with a high degree of independence.
- Coordinate cross‑functional teams (actuarial, pharmacy consultants, analysts, compliance specialists) to meet client needs.
- Ensure quality, accuracy, and clarity of all deliverables and client communications.
- Maintain thorough documentation and support governance requirements for Boards of Trustees.
Relationship Management & Business Development
- Build strong, trusted relationships with Trustees, union representatives, and fund office staff.
- Support business development efforts, including proposals, finalist presentations, and expanding services within existing clients.
- Identify opportunities to introduce innovative cost‑management, wellness, and vendor solutions.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in Health & Welfare consulting, insurance, brokerage, or benefits administration with a focus on Taft‑Hartley or multi‑employer plans.
- Deep understanding of union benefit funds, collective bargaining environments, and Trustee governance structures.
- Strong analytical and financial interpretation skills, particularly with medical/Rx claims, renewals, and cost projections.
- Experience reviewing plan documents, vendor contracts, and compliance materials.
- Proven ability to facilitate board meetings and present complex information clearly and confidently.
- Strong project management capabilities and experience overseeing multiple clients simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working directly with Boards of Trustees, union leaders, and fund offices.
- Knowledge of stop‑loss placement, PBM contracting, Rx program optimization, or clinical pharmacy trends.
- Familiarity with specialized Taft‑Hartley programs (e.g., reciprocity, eligibility systems, tiered contributions).
- CEBS designation or progress toward professional benefits certifications.
