Senior Underwriter - Construction General Liability
Are you an experienced construction liability underwriter looking to take ownership of complex risks and play a key role in profitable portfolio growth? Our client is seeking a GL-focused Senior Underwriter to join their team and lead underwriting excellence within the construction segment.
In this role, you'll be responsible for underwriting sophisticated and high-value General Liability risks across the construction sector. You'll evaluate complex submissions, analyze exposures, structure coverage, and negotiate terms that balance competitiveness with profitability. As a senior technical resource, you'll also mentor junior team members and strengthen broker partnerships to drive sustained growth.
What You'll Do
Underwriting & Risk Analysis
- Underwrite construction-related General Liability risks, including wrap-ups, project-specific placements, and contractor programs
- Assess exposure quality, loss experience, financials, and alignment with underwriting guidelines
- Price and structure coverage terms based on risk characteristics, contractual requirements, and market conditions
Portfolio Management
- Manage and grow a profitable book of business within defined appetite
- Monitor loss ratios, trends, and key performance indicators
- Proactively identify adverse development and implement corrective strategies
Broker & Market Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and agents
- Negotiate terms to secure attractive, sustainable accounts
- Serve as a trusted underwriting partner through responsive, solution-oriented service
Leadership & Mentorship
- Act as a technical resource for junior underwriters and underwriting assistants
- Share expertise on construction risk, policy structures, and best practices
Governance & Documentation
- Ensure underwriting decisions align with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and risk tolerance
- Maintain clear, accurate, and well-documented underwriting files
What You Bring
Experience & Education
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field
- 7+ years of underwriting experience, including 3+ years focused on Construction General Liability
- Demonstrated success underwriting complex accounts and large-scale construction projects
Technical & Professional Skills
- Strong analytical judgment and negotiation capability
- In-depth knowledge of construction operations, contractual risk transfer, and insurance requirements
- Proficiency with underwriting systems, rating tools, and Microsoft Office
Credentials
- Professional designations such as CPCU, AU, or RPLU preferred
