Position Overview
Our client is seeking a strategic and experienced insurance professional to lead the Hull & Liability underwriting operations for the East Coast region. This leadership role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and is passionate about building broker relationships, mentoring underwriters, and driving profitable growth in a specialized line of business.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting Leadership:
Oversee all aspects of underwriting for Hull & Liability accounts, including risk selection, pricing, coverage terms, and portfolio management. Ensure underwriting decisions align with company guidelines and profitability targets.Team Development:
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters. Provide guidance on complex risks, support professional development, and foster a collaborative, high-performance culture.Broker & Market Engagement:
Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and key market partners. Represent the company at industry events, conduct broker meetings, and identify new business opportunities.Strategic Planning:
Develop and execute a regional marketing and growth strategy. Analyze market trends, competitor activity, and portfolio performance to inform underwriting and business development decisions.Risk Analysis & Portfolio Management:
Monitor and assess risk exposures across the portfolio. Use data and analytics to evaluate trends, identify opportunities, and mitigate potential losses.Operational Excellence:
Collaborate with internal teams (claims, actuarial, legal, etc.) to ensure seamless execution of underwriting strategies. Lead or contribute to special projects aimed at improving processes, tools, and outcomes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, insurance, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)
- 8+ years of commercial underwriting experience, with a focus on marine or specialty lines
- Proven leadership experience managing underwriters or underwriting teams
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
- Proficiency in underwriting systems and data analysis tools
