Beware of Recruitment Scams: What You Need to Know

GlobalCareer AdviceJob Search Tips
Recruitment Scam Alert

At Selby Jennings, we are committed to protecting the professionals we work with. Unfortunately, as the demand for top talent in financial sciences and services continues to grow, so too does the activity of scammers trying to exploit job seekers. We want to make you aware of the tactics these individuals use, what they’re after, and how you can protect yourself.

These deceptions may include fraudulent communications via LinkedIn direct messaging, email, or text message. Note that any communication you receive from Selby Jennings would come from a @selbyjennings.com e-mail address (not from a free email account such as Yahoo or Gmail) and/or be found on the selbyjennings.com website. At no point during our hiring process would we request any form of monetary payment.

What should I look out for?

One of the most common deceptive practices is when people are impersonating recruiters and companies like ours to trick candidates into providing personal information, paying fake fees, or even unknowingly sharing sensitive financial data through the guise of selling you a "dream role." They may even go as far as copying real job postings, spoofing emails, or creating fake LinkedIn or WhatsApp accounts using the names of legitimate consultants.

What are they trying to get?

  • Personal data (e.g., passport information, Social Security numbers, bank details)
  • Money through fraudulent “application,” “processing,” or “training” fees
  • Access to accounts or devices via malicious links or attachments
  • Professional credentials that can be used for identity theft or further misuse

How are they doing it?

Here are some common red flags to watch out for:

  • Unsolicited messages that don’t come from an official company email address (e.g., @selbyjennings.com)
  • Pressure tactics, such as urgency to “secure the role” in exchange for payment or personal info
  • Poor grammar or formatting in emails, messages, or documents
  • Job offers without interviews or without verifying your background
  • Requests for money - we never charge candidates for job opportunities

How to stay safe

  • Verify recruiter identities by checking their LinkedIn profiles and ensuring emails come from official domains.
  • Report suspicious contact by reporting an email as phishing.
  • Never send money or share sensitive personal documents unless you’re 100% certain of the legitimacy.
  • Bookmark our website and only apply through official channels.

Your safety and trust are paramount to us at Selby Jennings. We will never ask you for money or sensitive information upfront. If you’re ever unsure about a situation, please reach out to info@selbyjennings.com. We take these matters seriously and can help validate or debunk suspicious communications.
