Job Title: Commercial Lines Lead Underwriter
Location: Remote (IL, MI, IN)
Salary: $90,000 - $135,000

Overview:
The Commercial Lines Lead Underwriter plays a pivotal role in managing and servicing a profitable book of renewal business within a defined agency territory. Operating with limited supervision, this role requires advanced technical underwriting expertise and strong relationship management skills. The Lead Underwriter serves as a key liaison between the company and agency partners, ensuring exceptional service delivery and strategic account stewardship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the underwriting and review of new and renewal commercial lines applications, assessing risk and determining acceptability in line with company guidelines.
  • Set accurate premiums using actuarial data, statistical analysis, and sound judgment within delegated authority.
  • Drive monthly renewal strategy meetings and act as the primary point of contact for assigned agencies.
  • Develop and implement service strategies that align with customer service commitments.
  • Maintain strong internal and external communication to support underwriting practices, growth objectives, and agency relationships.
  • Stay informed on underwriting strategies, pricing trends, and market appetite, and assist in executing branch-level strategies.
  • Notify agencies of underwriting decisions and provide clear communication on requirements, status updates, and declinations.
  • Monitor regulatory and industry developments within assigned territories and share insights with the team.
  • Contribute to departmental initiatives, projects, and process improvements as a subject matter expert.
  • Mentor and support the development of underwriters, underwriting assistants, and interns; may serve as a direct leader for support staff.

Qualifications:

  • 5-8 years of experience in Commercial Lines Underwriting.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven leadership, mentoring, and technical underwriting capabilities.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and relationship-building skills.
