Head of Underwriting - Contract Surety

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly experienced and entrepreneurial Head of Underwriting - Contract Surety to lead our contract surety efforts across Texas and the surrounding markets. This individual will focus on large contract surety underwriting, new business acquisition, and regional business development, with a strong emphasis on strategic growth.

As the senior surety leader in the region, the ideal candidate will have deep underwriting expertise, a robust network of broker and agent relationships, and a keen understanding of the Texas construction market.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the underwriting of large contract surety accounts with a focus on new business opportunities across Texas and neighboring states.

  • Develop and execute a regional business development strategy aligned with national goals.

  • Build and manage a pipeline of prospective clients through existing relationships, industry events, and targeted outreach.

  • Evaluate complex risks and structure customized surety solutions to meet client and market needs.

  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership to inform and implement national underwriting strategy.

  • Serve as the regional face of the company to agents, brokers, and industry stakeholders.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior underwriters as the team grows.

  • Maintain underwriting discipline and profitability in accordance with company standards.

  • Monitor competitive landscape, market trends, and regulatory developments impacting the surety market in Texas.


Required Qualifications:

  • 20+ years of contract surety underwriting experience, with a focus on large accounts.

  • Strong existing relationships with brokers and agents in the Texas region.

  • Deep understanding of construction risk, contractor financial analysis, and bond structures.

  • Demonstrated success in business development and new market penetration.

  • Experience in strategic planning and/or leadership roles within a surety division.

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and collaborate across time zones and geographies.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
