Job Summary
The Underwriting Assistant serves as a key member of the underwriting team, providing administrative and analytical support throughout the underwriting lifecycle, from pre-submission through policy issuance and renewal. This role partners closely with Underwriters to support growth, profitability, account retention, and agent service by gathering, analyzing, and organizing information necessary to make sound underwriting decisions.
The ideal candidate will assist with new and renewal business, risk assessments, policy administration, and account servicing while ensuring accuracy, quality, and timely execution of all related activities. The Underwriting Assistant plays an integral role in supporting underwriting operations and delivering exceptional service to both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with Underwriters to support new and renewal business by identifying and gathering relevant account information.
- Analyze account-specific information and summarize findings for Underwriter review, including loss history, financial information, operational details, and risk control reports.
- Research and evaluate account information to support underwriting analysis and regulatory compliance.
- Assist with submission clearance, rating, binders, policy issuance, endorsements, cancellations, renewal preparation, and state and federal filings.
- Participate in pre-renewal meetings and provide underwriting support throughout the renewal process.
- Prepare underwriting and pricing exhibits, including exposure updates, rating worksheets, pricing analyses, and account summaries.
- Issue policies and coordinate invoicing in accordance with Underwriter instructions.
- Maintain organized and complete account files, including correspondence, proposals, endorsements, cancellations, and other documentation.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for agents, brokers, and customers regarding account-related inquiries.
- Provide general administrative support to the underwriting team.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- 2+ years of commercial auto underwriting assistant experience.
- Knowledge of commercial lines insurance products.
- Strong technical and computer skills with the ability to navigate multiple systems and platforms.
- Ability to independently manage competing priorities and a complex workload while exercising sound judgment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and analytical abilities with a high attention to detail.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with agents, brokers, and internal business partners.
