Middle Market Underwriter

Location: Hybrid - San Francisco (Remote Flexibility)
Salary: $129,500 - $174,800 base + incentive eligible

Our client, a global specialty insurer known for collaborative teams and innovative underwriting, is seeking a Middle Market Underwriter to help drive profitable growth across key casualty and property lines. You'll partner closely with brokers and clients, structure creative programs, and contribute as a technical lead in at least one product area (e.g., General Liability, Umbrella/Excess, Commercial Auto, Commercial Property, or Workers' Compensation). This role blends portfolio ownership with hands‑on deal work-ideal for an underwriter who enjoys building relationships, moving decisively, and delivering sound results in a fast, team‑first environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Underwrite new and renewal middle‑market accounts to meet top‑ and bottom‑line targets; negotiate participation, pricing, and terms & conditions with producers.
  • Own broker portfolios and key accounts; proactively manage capacity, pipeline, and retention while developing new opportunities.
  • Serve as the technical go‑to for at least one sub‑LoB or product (GL, Umbrella, Auto, Property, or WC), including coaching less‑experienced underwriters.
  • Evaluate NatCat accumulation where relevant; interpret catastrophe models to inform risk selection and pricing.
  • Ensure compliance with governance (authorities, guidelines, rules/principles) and place any required facultative reinsurance prior to inception.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally (claims, actuarial/risk control, operations) to deliver a consistent, best‑in‑class client and broker experience.

What We're Looking For:

  • 4+ years of P&C underwriting experience (middle market preferred) with established broker relationships.
  • Strong grasp of regional market dynamics, competitor landscape, and applicable legal/regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrated skill in risk assessment, pricing/market management, contract language, and policy lifecycle execution.
  • Clear, persuasive communicator with the ability to influence outcomes and mentor peers; proficient with standard office applications.
  • Bachelor's degree required (Business, Economics, Finance, Insurance Management preferred); CPCU or similar professional designation is a plus.

Why Join Our Client?

  • Compensation & upside: Competitive base ($129,500-$174,800) with incentive eligibility tied to impact and results.
  • Real autonomy with support: Limited, preferred distribution and industry‑specialized underwriting, claims, and risk control partners behind you.
  • Career growth: Opportunities to lead product niches, train underwriters, and shape underwriting strategy at the regional level.
  • Benefits that stand out: Multiple medical plans, dental/vision/Rx, generous 401(k) match (plus fixed non‑elective contributions), student‑loan assistance, tuition reimbursement, ~20 days starting PTO, ~12 paid holidays, volunteer time off, parental leave, backup child/elder care, and more.
  • Culture that empowers: A collaborative, performance‑minded environment focused on enabling possibility for clients, colleagues, and communities.

If you're a decisive underwriter who thrives on complex problem‑solving, broker partnership, and building profitable portfolios, apply today and step into a role where you can make a market‑level impact.
