They are seeking a Senior Underwriter to join their Colorado underwriting team, handling complex commercial business with meaningful authority and local market impact.


Role Overview

The Senior Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting new and renewal commercial accounts, managing a profitable book of business, and serving as a trusted partner to brokers in the Colorado market. This role blends technical underwriting expertise with relationship management and portfolio ownership.


Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Risk Evaluation

  • Underwrite new and renewal commercial lines business in accordance with established guidelines and appetite
  • Evaluate complex and/or higher‑hazard risks using sound underwriting judgment
  • Analyze financials, loss history, operations, and industry exposure to determine appropriate pricing and terms
  • Structure coverage, limits, and deductibles aligned with profitability and risk quality goals
  • Exercise independent underwriting authority within assigned level

Portfolio Management

  • Manage an assigned book of business to achieve growth, retention, and loss ratio targets
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identify trends, and address emerging risk issues
  • Balance new business production with disciplined renewal management

Broker & Market Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with agency and broker partners across Colorado
  • Serve as a responsive, consultative underwriting resource
  • Participate in agency meetings, marketing visits, and local industry events

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with claims, loss control, and underwriting management teams
  • Provide technical guidance or informal mentorship to less experienced underwriters
  • Contribute to underwriting initiatives, training, and process improvements

Qualifications

  • 5-10+ years of commercial underwriting experience
  • Strong technical underwriting skills with experience handling complex accounts
  • Knowledge of the Colorado insurance market preferred
  • Ability to manage a book of business with meaningful authority
  • Strong analytical, communication, and relationship‑management skills
  • Professional insurance designations (CPCU, AU, or similar) a plus
