Pension Actuary
Overview
Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Pension Actuary to lead actuarial strategy, client delivery, and complex pension consulting engagements. This role suits a technical expert who also excels in client management, project leadership, and mentoring junior team members. They advise corporate, public‑sector, and multi‑employer plan sponsors on plan design, funding, compliance, risk management, and long‑term pension strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Client Consulting & Strategy
- Serve as the lead actuarial consultant for a portfolio of defined benefit (DB) plan clients, delivering strategic guidance on funding, plan design, valuation results, and long‑term financial implications.
- Present complex actuarial concepts to senior HR, finance, and executive‑level stakeholders.
- Analyze and model pension risk, recommending strategies such as liability‑driven investing, plan freezes, risk transfers, or other de‑risking approaches.
Actuarial Analysis & Technical Expertise
- Oversee annual and quarterly valuations, experience studies, assumption reviews, and cash‑flow projections.
- Lead preparation of actuarial reports, GASB/ASC 715 disclosures, government filings, and regulatory compliance materials.
- Ensure accuracy, methodology, and quality of all actuarial deliverables.
Regulatory & Compliance
- Monitor and interpret changes to ERISA, IRS regulations, PBGC rules, and accounting standards.
- Guide clients through regulatory updates, funding relief provisions, and compliance obligations.
Project & Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor actuarial analysts and junior consultants, reviewing work for accuracy, clarity, and completeness.
- Oversee project timelines, budgets, and workflow to ensure seamless execution and exceptional client service.
- Support business development efforts, including proposal development, pricing strategy, and participation in finalist presentations.
Required Qualifications
- ASA or FSA designation (EA highly preferred).
- 7-12+ years of actuarial pension consulting experience at a professional services, insurance, or advisory firm.
- Deep knowledge of DB plan funding rules, accounting standards, and actuarial modeling techniques.
- Proven ability to manage client relationships and deliver executive‑level presentations.
- Strong leadership experience with a track record of supervising actuarial staff.
- Proficiency with actuarial software (e.g., ProVal, Pension Gold), Excel, and data tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with public sector, multi‑employer, or hybrid DB/DC plan designs.
- Familiarity with pension governance and enterprise risk management frameworks.
- Business development or practice‑growth experience.
