P&C Underwriter
We are currently partnering with a well-established and rapidly growing wholesale insurance brokerage based in the Southern U.S. to identify a talented and experienced Generalist Property & Casualty Underwriter. This is a direct-hire opportunity with a respected firm that serves a broad network of retail agents and brokers nationwide.
We are seeking candidates who bring a strong underwriting background across all major lines of commercial P&C business. This includes Property, General Liability, Excess/Umbrella, Inland Marine, Commercial Auto, and more. The ideal candidate is a versatile, entrepreneurial underwriter who thrives in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment and is passionate about delivering value across a wide range of industries and risk profiles.
Key responsibilities
Underwriting & Risk Evaluation
- Analyze and assess new and renewal submissions across all major commercial P&C lines.
- Determine risk acceptability, pricing, terms, and conditions in accordance with company guidelines and carrier appetites.
- Apply sound judgment and underwriting discipline to ensure profitability and portfolio balance.
Broker & Agent Relationship Management
- Serve as a trusted resource and advisor to retail agents and brokers.
- Provide timely and accurate responses to inquiries, submissions, and quote requests.
- Cultivate long-term relationships that drive repeat business and mutual growth.
Carrier & Market Engagement
- Maintain strong working relationships with carrier underwriters and wholesale market partners.
- Stay current on carrier appetites, guidelines, and product offerings.
- Negotiate terms and secure competitive quotes from multiple markets when necessary.
Portfolio Management
- Monitor and manage the performance of your book of business, including loss ratios, retention, and growth metrics.
- Identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement within your portfolio.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop strategies for profitable expansion.
Cross-Line Expertise
- Demonstrate proficiency in underwriting across a wide range of commercial lines, including:
- Property: Frame, joisted masonry, non-combustible, and fire-resistive structures; CAT-exposed risks; vacant properties; habitational and mixed-use buildings.
- General Liability: Premises/operations, products/completed operations, contractors, hospitality, manufacturing, and more.
- Excess & Umbrella: Lead and follow-form excess placements, layered programs, and high-hazard exposures.
- Inland Marine: Builders risk, installation floaters, contractor's equipment, and miscellaneous floaters.
- Commercial Auto: Local/intermediate trucking, contractor fleets, hired/non-owned auto.
- Professional Liability: E&O, D&O, cyber, and miscellaneous professional risks.
- Specialty Lines: Environmental, liquor liability, event coverage, and other niche products.
- Demonstrate proficiency in underwriting across a wide range of commercial lines, including:
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure all underwriting files are complete, accurate, and compliant with internal and external requirements.
- Maintain detailed records of underwriting decisions, correspondence, and carrier communications.
Collaboration & Mentorship
- Work closely with internal teams including brokerage, operations, and accounting to ensure seamless policy issuance and servicing.
- Mentor junior underwriters or underwriting assistants as needed.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 5-7 years of commercial P&C underwriting experience, preferably in a wholesale or E&S environment.
- Licensing: Property & Casualty license preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business, Finance, or related field preferred.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in underwriting systems, rating tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge Base: Deep understanding of ISO forms, manuscript endorsements, and carrier-specific guidelines.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex insurance concepts clearly.
- Analytical Thinking: Ability to assess risk holistically and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Time Management: Capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a high-volume environment.
- Team Player: Collaborative mindset with a willingness to share knowledge and support team goals.
