Job Description
A leading clean energy company is seeking a Head of West Trading to oversee its power trading and asset optimization activities across the CAISO market. This role will lead commercial strategy for a growing portfolio of energy storage assets, manage nodal bidding and hedging activities, and develop forward‑looking trading strategies in both Day‑Ahead and Real‑Time markets.
Responsibilities
- Lead commercial and P&L ownership of CAISO market activities, including storage optimization, hedging, and structured transactions.
- Research, design, and evaluate trading strategies and algorithms across all revenue streams (Power, Ancillaries, Resource Adequacy, renewable products, etc.).
- Execute trades to hedge and optimize commodity exposures from prompt through 5‑year forward tenors.
- Develop proprietary trading strategies to expand and enhance portfolio value.
- Manage and mentor a Power Analyst responsible for daily bidding, market analytics, and asset optimization.
- Represent the company in CAISO stakeholder groups, policy forums, and industry conferences.
- Ensure adherence to internal risk policies and external standards, including CAISO tariff requirements and applicable regulatory frameworks.
- Partner with cross‑functional teams including Asset Operations, Risk, Finance, M&A, and Development.
- Build and operate analytical, valuation, fundamental, and statistical models and tools to inform commercial decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a quantitative or technical field (Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.).
- 8-10+ years of experience in power trading, portfolio optimization, or energy market operations, with deep expertise in CAISO or another U.S. ISO/RTO.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing analysts and collaborating across business functions.
- Advanced analytical skills, including proficiency in Python, SQL, and Excel/VBA; coding experience preferred but not mandatory.
- Strong understanding of ISO market instruments, market design, tariff mechanisms, and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with energy storage assets, FTRs, and congestion management strongly preferred.
- Excellent communication, problem‑solving, and strategic thinking abilities.
