Stop Loss Underwriting Consultant
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Stop Loss Underwriting Consultant to serve as a subject matter expert in Medical Stop Loss underwriting. This individual will play a key role in evaluating complex risks, supporting strategic growth initiatives, and providing underwriting expertise across both new business and renewal business. The ideal candidate will bring 10-15 years of stop loss underwriting experience, a deep understanding of self-funded employer health plans, and a proven ability to navigate complex risk assessments in a competitive market.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite medical stop loss cases for both new business and renewal accounts.
- Evaluate risk, pricing, and financial performance of self-funded employer groups across a range of market segments.
- Serve as a stop loss subject matter expert for underwriting strategy, risk selection, and market trends.
- Analyze large claims experience, utilization patterns, and emerging risk factors to develop profitable underwriting recommendations.
- Provide guidance on complex case structures, laser negotiations, and exception requests.
- Partner closely with sales, actuarial, claims, and leadership teams to support growth and retention objectives.
- Monitor portfolio performance and recommend pricing, rate, and underwriting guideline adjustments as needed.
- Assist in developing underwriting best practices, training materials, and mentorship for junior underwriting staff.
- Support broker and client discussions by providing technical underwriting expertise and market insights.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives aimed at improving underwriting efficiency, profitability, and competitive positioning.
Qualifications
- 10-15 years of Medical Stop Loss underwriting experience.
- Extensive experience underwriting both new business and renewal business.
- Deep expertise in self-funded employer health plans and stop loss products.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment, pricing methodologies, large claim analysis, and underwriting profitability.
- Proven ability to evaluate complex and non-standard stop loss opportunities.
- Experience collaborating with actuarial, sales, claims, and account management teams.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex underwriting concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Experience
- Experience supporting national broker relationships and large employer groups.
- Background working with carriers, MGUs, TPAs, or stop loss managing general underwriters.
- Exposure to underwriting strategy, product development, or portfolio management.
- Experience mentoring underwriters and serving in a technical leadership capacity.
