About the Opportunity
Our client, a Top 35 U.S. Property & Casualty carrier by Gross Written Premium, is seeking an experienced Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter to join its growing Middle Market team. This is a fully remote position; however, candidates must reside in Maryland to effectively manage agency relationships and support business development efforts throughout the territory.
This role offers the opportunity to underwrite a diverse commercial portfolio across multiple lines of business while partnering closely with independent agents and brokers to drive profitable growth.
Responsibilities
- Independently underwrite and manage a profitable book of Commercial Lines business throughout Maryland.
- Evaluate new and renewal submissions across multiple lines, including Property, General Liability, Commercial Auto, Umbrella, and Workers' Compensation.
- Assess risk exposures, coverage needs, pricing adequacy, and account profitability.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with agency partners to drive production and retention.
- Travel periodically within the territory for agency meetings, marketing visits, and relationship-building activities.
- Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing within established underwriting authority.
- Collaborate with internal teams including Claims, Risk Control, and Operations to provide exceptional service to clients and distribution partners.
- Monitor market trends, competitive conditions, and portfolio performance to support profitable growth initiatives.
- Mentor junior underwriting staff when appropriate and serve as a technical underwriting resource.
Qualifications
- 6+ years of Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting experience.
- Experience underwriting multi-line middle market accounts.
- Strong knowledge of Commercial Lines coverages, pricing, risk assessment, and portfolio management.
- Proven success developing and maintaining independent agency and broker relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex risks and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Professional designations such as CPCU, AU, ARM, or CIC are a plus.
