Health Actuary, VBP - Government Programs
We're working with a healthcare consulting firm that is looking to add an Actuary to its Medicare and Medicaid Value-Based Payment team.
This search is focused on actuaries who have been deeply involved in provider risk arrangements and value-based payment models, not just traditional pricing or reserving work. The team is looking for someone who understands how these programs are structured, how financial performance is measured, and how organizations evaluate risk across different reimbursement models.
The work sits at the intersection of health plans, providers, ACOs, and government programs, with a particular focus on Medicare and Medicaid populations.
What You'll Be Doing
- Analyze healthcare data to evaluate the performance of value-based payment arrangements.
- Build financial models related to provider risk, shared savings, capitation, and other alternative payment structures.
- Support clients with Medicare and Medicaid value-based care initiatives.
- Review and interpret regulatory changes and assess their impact on payment programs.
- Develop reports and presentations for client leadership and other non-technical stakeholders.
- Lead projects from start to finish, including managing timelines, deliverables, and budgets.
- Mentor junior actuarial staff and review technical work.
- Build relationships with existing clients and support new business opportunities as the practice continues to grow.
What They're Looking For
- ASA or FSA designation.
- 7+ years of health actuarial experience.
- Strong experience working with value-based payment arrangements, including:
- Shared savings programs
- Shared risk models
- Capitation arrangements
- Provider incentive programs
- Other provider reimbursement and risk-sharing structures
- Experience supporting Medicare and/or Medicaid programs.
- Prior consulting experience working with health plans, provider organizations, ACOs, or state Medicaid agencies.
- Experience leading projects and mentoring more junior actuaries.
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with SQL, SAS, Python, or R is a plus.
Ideal Background
The strongest candidates will have spent several years working directly on provider payment and risk arrangements rather than primarily on pricing, reserving, or financial reporting work. Experience with programs such as ACO REACH, MSSP, Medicare Advantage provider risk, managed Medicaid value-based programs, TEAM, or AHEAD would be especially relevant.
This is a strong opportunity for someone who enjoys provider-focused actuarial work and wants to continue building expertise in Medicare and Medicaid value-based payment models while working with a variety of healthcare organizations.
