The Middle Market Underwriting Specialist is responsible for driving profitable portfolio growth by evaluating and underwriting new and renewal business. This role partners closely with producers to negotiate pricing, terms, and conditions, while actively managing capacity and ensuring adherence to governance requirements and underwriting guidelines. This is a market-facing position with expected broker engagement throughout the territory. The role can be hybrid at the Chicago office, or fully remote within the greater Chicago area.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite new and renewal business to achieve profitability and growth goals.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and conditions with producers.
- Manage capacity and evaluate natural catastrophe exposure, including interpreting catastrophe model results.
- Ensure underwriting decisions align with governance frameworks, authorities, and guidelines.
- Achieve contract certainty at inception and utilize global pricing tools.
- Arrange and bind facultative reinsurance before policy inception.
- Ensure accurate policy documentation and maintain complete underwriting files.
- Support policy administration and credit control processes.
- Contribute to regional underwriting strategy and provide coaching to less-experienced team members.
Education & Experience
- Minimum of 5+ years of underwriting experience with a track record of profitable business results.
- Deep expertise in relevant sub-line products and portfolio management.
- Strong relationships with brokers and a respected presence in the market.
- Solid understanding of regional and local market dynamics, competitor activity, and global industry trends.
- Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance, Insurance Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
- Professional insurance designations (e.g., CPCU) are a plus.
