Position Summary
The company is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all accounting and financial operations within a fast‑moving, highly regulated insurance environment. This individual will serve as the senior leader responsible for the integrity of financial reporting, statutory compliance, internal controls, and technical accounting across the enterprise.
The ideal candidate brings advanced P&C insurance expertise, deep hands‑on experience in reinsurance structures, and the ability to build and elevate finance teams during periods of rapid expansion. This role combines strategic leadership with day‑to‑day technical execution.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Oversight
- Direct all core accounting functions including the general ledger, intercompany activity, financial consolidations, and core operational accounting processes (AP, AR, payroll).
- Ensure precise and timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles in accordance with US GAAP and insurance statutory accounting principles.
- Maintain strong internal controls and financial governance to support organizational growth and regulatory expectations.
Technical Accounting & Insurance Expertise
- Serve as the internal authority on complex P&C accounting topics such as premium recognition, loss reserving, reinsurance (ceded and assumed), investment accounting, and impairment analysis.
- Assess proposals for new products, structural changes, or large transactions and advise senior leadership on accounting implications.
- Lead the evaluation, adoption, and implementation of new accounting standards and regulatory updates.
Regulatory & Statutory Reporting
- Oversee the preparation, accuracy, and submission of statutory filings, including annual statements, quarterly statements, premium tax returns, and related regulatory reports.
- Manage interactions with regulatory bodies, auditors, and examination teams, ensuring transparency and readiness for all reviews.
Cross‑Functional Partnership & Strategic Support
- Collaborate with actuarial, underwriting, and operational leadership to align financial reporting with business performance, risk dynamics, and growth initiatives.
- Support capital planning, underwriting profitability analysis, and strategic financial decision‑making.
Team Leadership
- Develop, mentor, and guide a high‑performing accounting team, supporting professional growth and fostering operational excellence.
- Strengthen capabilities as the organization scales, including evaluating future staffing needs and helping shape long‑term finance operations.
Continuous Improvement
- Design and refine accounting policies, workflows, and financial systems to improve scalability, efficiency, and accuracy.
- Play a key role in system upgrades, automation initiatives, and process transformation projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar discipline; CPA is required.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a senior leadership role such as Controller or Assistant Controller.
- Mandatory experience in P&C insurance accounting, including comprehensive reinsurance knowledge; fronting experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of statutory insurance reporting and U.S. GAAP.
- Experience in a scaling or high‑growth organization is highly desirable.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and comfort working with ERP and financial reporting systems.
- Experience evaluating, implementing, or upgrading financial systems is a plus.
- Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to be on‑site regularly to support collaboration and team development.
