Enrolled Actuary
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Pension Actuary to support the valuation, design, and ongoing management of defined benefit (DB) retirement plans. This role is responsible for delivering actuarial calculations, regulatory compliance, and strategic consulting to plan sponsors, ensuring financial soundness and alignment with applicable regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Actuarial Valuations & Analysis
- Perform annual funding and accounting valuations for defined benefit pension plans (e.g., ASC 715, IAS 19).
- Calculate plan liabilities, funded status, and contribution requirements.
- Develop actuarial assumptions (mortality, discount rate, retirement, turnover).
- Conduct experience studies and recommend assumption updates.
Plan Design & Strategy
- Advise clients on pension plan design, amendments, and risk management strategies.
- Model financial impact of plan changes (e.g., freezes, lump sum windows, de-risking).
- Support plan terminations, mergers, and conversions.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with ERISA, IRS, and Pension Protection Act (PPA) requirements.
- Prepare and review actuarial certifications, Form 5500 schedules, and government filings.
- Interpret evolving legislation and assess impact to clients.
Client Advisory
- Serve as a key contact for clients on actuarial and pension-related matters.
- Present valuation results and strategic recommendations to stakeholders.
- Partner with investment, accounting, and HR teams.
Risk Management & De-risking
- Support liability-driven investing (LDI) strategies.
- Assist with pension risk transfer transactions (buy-outs, buy-ins).
- Analyze plan volatility and funding risk.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field
- Progress toward or completion of actuarial designation (ASA, FSA, EA preferred)
- 4-12+ years of pension actuarial experience (level dependent)
- Strong knowledge of defined benefit plans and funding/accounting standards
- Proficiency in actuarial software (e.g., ProVal, PFaroe) and Excel
Preferred
- Enrolled Actuary (EA) credential
- Consulting experience with corporate or public sector clients
- Experience with pension risk transfer or plan termination work
