Head of Shipping Operations - Bulk

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all vessel operations, including post-fixture activities and voyage execution.
  • Oversee voyage planning, optimizing cargo load and bunker consumption to maximize efficiency.
  • Monitor vessel performance at sea and in port, proactively minimizing delays, disputes, and claims.
  • Act as the primary liaison with shipowners, masters, charterers, brokers, and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with port agents on disbursements, cargo readiness, and vessel scheduling.
  • Arrange additional insurance coverage (e.g., war risk, LoH, K&R) as needed.
  • Ensure accurate and timely issuance of hire/freight statements, laytime calculations, and collections.
  • Collaborate with commercial and legal teams to manage and resolve claims.
  • Conduct voyage performance analysis and report deviations from initial estimates.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation and ensure data integrity in operational systems.
  • Negotiate and review Charter Party agreements and vendor contracts.
  • Drive cost-saving initiatives and process improvements across the operations function.
  • Provide technical expertise to optimize ship operations and resource utilization.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the operations team to ensure high performance and accountability.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience in shipping operations, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of charter party terms, laytime, post-fixture operations, and marine insurance.
  • Proven track record in managing vessel operations and resolving operational challenges.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proficiency in shipping operations software (e.g., IMOS, Veson) and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret performance data and drive strategic decisions.
  • Experience in leading teams and implementing process improvements.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
