AI Research Engineer - Hedge Fund
A globally recognized, multi-strategy hedge fund with over $40B in assets under management is seeking a mid-to-senior level AI Engineer to join a newly formed function within its data science and research technology organization. This is a high-impact, hands-on role focused on building intelligent systems that transform how enterprise and portfolio data is accessed, processed, and leveraged by quantitative researchers, portfolio managers, and analytics teams.
This opportunity sits at the intersection of AI engineering, data infrastructure, and quantitative research enablement. Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement intelligent data systems that support alpha research, portfolio construction, and risk analytics
- Build and maintain robust, ML-driven data pipelines for ingesting, transforming, and enriching internal and external financial datasets
- Develop tools and services that enable real-time data access, feature engineering, and model deployment across research teams
- Collaborate with quant researchers, PMs, and risk managers to understand data usage patterns and optimize infrastructure accordingly
- Ensure data quality, lineage, and observability across the firm's AI and analytics stack
- Contribute to the firm's broader AI and data modernization initiatives, including experimentation platforms and model governance
Ideal Candidate
- 3-7 years of experience in AI engineering, ML infrastructure, or data science roles supporting front-office or research teams at a hedge fund, asset manager, or trading firm
- Strong programming skills in Python (or similar), with experience in ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and data tooling (e.g., Airflow, Spark, dbt)
- Familiarity with financial market data, portfolio data, or risk data and how it's used in quantitative workflows
- Experience building scalable systems for model training, inference, and monitoring in production environments
- Strategic thinker who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and enjoys building from the ground up
- Bonus: Experience with feature stores, vector databases, or LLM-based research tools
