Senior .NET Backend Engineer
Senior .NET Backend Engineer
Location: Remote
Contract Type: Freelance (C2C / W2)
Team: ~10 engineers, working in Scrum
Domain: Trading, risk, and reporting systems modernization
Role Overview
The engineering team is reshaping a long‑standing trading and risk platform and moving it into a modern .NET Core ecosystem. You'll be designing and delivering new backend services while gradually carving functionality out of an older .NET codebase. The work sits at the crossroads of financial markets and high‑performance distributed systems, giving you a voice in the next generation of platform design.
We are looking for engineers not afraid of getting their hands dirty with an emphasis on new architecture, new services, and new tooling.
Our team values clear communication, collaborative design, and modern engineering habits, no hero culture, no chaos, no siloed roles.
Deliverables
- Redesigning parts of a legacy .NET system and transforming them into independent .NET 6/7/8 services based on Clean or Hexagonal principles
- Creating secure API layers with token‑based authentication and enforcing gateway‑level controls
- Reworking a legacy reporting subsystem into smaller, scalable components with clear performance expectations
- Building backend services that handle trading workflows, with attention to predictable execution under pressure
- Championing automated testing practices and raising the technical bar within the team
- Investigating runtime behaviour to improve throughput, memory efficiency, and responsiveness
- Strengthening CI/CD pipelines, deployment flows, and containerized environments
Tech Environment
- Languages & Frameworks: C#, .NET 6/7/8, ASP.NET Core
- Data: SQL Server and Oracle; exposure to alternative stores like Postgres or MongoDB useful
- Testing: xUnit, NUnit, Moq, FluentAssertions, SpecFlow
- Messaging: RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus, Kafka exposure welcome
- Infrastructure & Delivery: Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Jenkins or Azure DevOps, Git
- Observability: App Insights, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Seq
- Tooling: Visual Studio or Rider, GitHub/GitLab, Jira
Required experience
- Deep experience with C# and modern .NET, ideally in time‑sensitive or data‑intensive systems
- Strong background in breaking apart monolithic applications and shaping service boundaries
- Solid understanding of API security, token management, and gateway patterns
- Comfort with asynchronous programming, threading, and runtime performance tuning
- Hands‑on experience building software that runs reliably inside Kubernetes
- Familiarity with FIX or market‑driven message flows is helpful but not required
Additional skills that help
- Experience applying Clean Architecture or similar design approaches
- Insight into database performance, query execution, and indexing strategies
- Knowledge of event‑driven systems, especially if you've used Kafka
- Scripting ability in Bash or PowerShell
- Practical familiarity with logs, metrics, and tracing platforms
