Director, Tax
Company Overview: A leading insurance and retirement services organization is seeking an experienced Director of Tax to join its leadership team. The company manages a complex insurance platform with multiple operating entities and offers a collaborative environment where finance leaders play a key role in supporting strategic growth, regulatory compliance, and enterprise decision making.
Compensation: $180,000 - $200,000 base salary with bonus ~20%
Location: Topeka, Kansas, Overland Park, Kansas or Des Moines, Iowa
Job Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of federal, state, local, and international tax compliance across a multi-entity insurance organization.
- Oversee the quarterly and annual tax provision process, including ASC 740 calculations, deferred tax analyses, and related financial statement disclosures.
- Manage relationships with external tax advisors and ensure timely and accurate preparation of tax filings.
- Partner with senior leadership to evaluate the tax implications of strategic initiatives, investments, transactions, and corporate restructurings.
- Provide tax planning and forecasting support for budgeting, capital planning, and long range financial initiatives.
- Research complex tax matters and prepare technical analyses to support tax positions and audit defense.
- Oversee IRS and state tax audits, examinations, and inquiries.
- Support tax reporting related to insurance operations, including reinsurance structures and premium tax compliance.
- Drive process improvement initiatives and help modernize tax systems, controls, and reporting capabilities.
- Mentor and develop tax professionals while fostering a high-performing team environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA required; Master's in Taxation preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive tax experience within insurance, financial services, or public accounting.
- Strong knowledge of ASC 740 and income tax accounting.
- Experience managing complex corporate tax compliance and reporting requirements.
- Familiarity with statutory accounting and insurance industry regulations.
- Proven leadership experience managing teams and cross-functional projects.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to partner effectively with executive leadership.
- Experience working with tax technology platforms and financial reporting systems
