Family Office Controller

About the Role

The Family Office Investment Fund Controller will oversee the accounting, reporting, and operational functions for a diversified investment portfolio. This includes private equity co-investments across 3-4 active portfolio companies, multi-family real estate investments, and a broad portfolio of public equities and fixed income. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, proactive, and able to manage complex financial information across multiple asset classes.


Key Responsibilities

Investment Accounting & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate books and records for the family office investment entities.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and investment reports.
  • Track capital contributions, distributions, commitments, and waterfall flows.
  • Calculate and present key investment metrics, including IRR, ROI, and performance summaries.

Portfolio Oversight

  • Manage accounting and reporting for private equity co-investments, including monitoring 3-4 active portfolio companies.
  • Support oversight of multi-family real estate investments, including cash flow tracking, property-level reporting, and debt schedules.
  • Reconcile positions and activity for stocks, bonds, and marketable securities.

Fund Operations & Administration

  • Coordinate and review all investment subscriptions, transfers, capital calls, and redemptions.
  • Maintain an understanding of LLC structures, partnership agreements, and operating agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and reporting standards.

Tax & Audit Coordination

  • Collect and organize K-1s, 1099s, and all other tax-related documentation.
  • Prepare schedules and support external tax preparers through tax season.
  • Manage and support annual financial audits with external auditors.
  • Monitor estimated tax payments and ensure timely filing deadlines.

Reconciliations & Reporting Controls

  • Perform monthly bank, investment account, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Review and verify capital account balances across all entities.
  • Maintain supporting documentation for all investment valuations and transactions.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally with exposure to investment, real estate, or fund accounting.
  • Public accounting experience preferred, especially within audit or investment-focused practices.
  • CPA preferred (active or inactive).
  • Strong understanding of partnership accounting, capital structures, and investment entities.
  • Experience with private equity, real estate investment structures, and public market securities.
  • Advanced Excel skills; familiarity with investment accounting systems a plus.
  • Excellent analytical skills, organizational abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial family office environment.
