About the Role
Our client is seeking an accomplished AVP of Middle Market Property Underwriting to lead and grow their property portfolio across the Northern California region. This senior-level underwriting role combines technical expertise, market engagement, and strategic influence.
As an AVP Underwriter, you will be responsible for underwriting complex middle market property risks, driving profitable growth, strengthening broker relationships, and helping shape underwriting strategy within a key geographic territory.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Portfolio Leadership
- Underwrite and price complex middle market property accounts in accordance with underwriting guidelines, pricing models, and risk appetite.
- Evaluate detailed exposure information, including COPE data, catastrophe models, loss histories, financials, and risk engineering reports.
- Maintain a profitable book of business through disciplined risk selection, renewal management, and execution of underwriting strategy.
- Develop and refine portfolio management strategies, identifying trends, gaps, and opportunities to enhance profitability.
Market-Facing & Business Development
- Serve as a senior market representative for our client in Northern California, building and expanding relationships with key brokers and agents.
- Conduct regular broker meetings, joint planning sessions, and account-specific negotiations to drive new business and retain high-quality accounts.
- Represent our client at industry events, conferences, and market functions to strengthen visibility and engagement within the region.
Strategic & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with claims, risk engineering, actuarial, and product teams to improve underwriting outcomes and enhance loss mitigation strategies.
- Provide insights to leadership on competitive trends, market conditions, and distribution dynamics in Northern California.
- Participate in the development and rollout of underwriting tools, guidelines, and strategic initiatives.
Leadership, Mentorship & Technical Expertise
- Act as a technical resource and mentor for junior and mid-level underwriters, supporting development of underwriting acumen and consistency.
- Lead complex account reviews and provide guidance on structuring terms, limits, deductibles, and coverage solutions.
- Contribute to training sessions and knowledge-sharing initiatives across the Middle Market team.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in commercial property underwriting, with an emphasis on middle market or large account segments.
- Deep technical understanding of property risk evaluation, including CAT modeling, construction factors, and occupancy exposures.
- Proven track record managing distribution relationships and driving profitable growth in a field-based role.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and negotiation skills.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to travel within the Northern California territory.
