Staff Accountant - Property & Casualty Insurance
About the Role
We're seeking a detail‑oriented Staff Accountant to join our Finance team within a growing Property & Casualty insurance organization. This role is ideal for an early‑career accounting professional who wants to deepen their technical skills, gain exposure to statutory reporting, and support core accounting operations in a highly regulated industry.
Responsibilities
- Perform day‑to‑day general ledger activities, including posting journal entries and preparing account reconciliations.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial results.
- Support the preparation of statutory and GAAP financial schedules, statements, and supporting documentation.
- Review financial data for completeness, accuracy, and consistency, identifying discrepancies and resolving issues promptly.
- Maintain assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts, ensuring all activity is properly recorded and supported.
- Apply relevant accounting standards, including SSAP and GAAP, when recording financial transactions.
- Compile data for internal and external audits, responding to requests and preparing backup files.
- Contribute to departmental projects, such as process improvements, system enhancements, and workflow documentation.
- Assist with expense allocations, invoice coding, and cross‑functional financial requests as needed.
Qualifications
Knowledge & Skills
- Solid understanding of foundational accounting principles and basic financial reporting.
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance requirements, particularly those relevant to insurance (preferred but not required).
- Proficiency with spreadsheet tools (Excel or similar) and comfort working with financial software systems.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Effective communication abilities - both written and verbal.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
- CPA or CPA eligibility strongly preferred
- 1-3 years of accounting experience; insurance industry experience is a plus but not mandatory.
