Position Overview
The Senior/Lead Underwriter plays a critical role in the success of the Middle Market Renewal Underwriting team. This individual is responsible for managing a portfolio of complex commercial accounts, driving profitable growth, and mentoring junior underwriters. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise, strong analytical skills, and a collaborative mindset to support strategic underwriting decisions and maintain strong agency relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwriting Excellence: Evaluate, select, and price renewal business in accordance with company guidelines and risk appetite for middle market commercial lines (e.g., property, general liability, auto, workers' compensation).
- Portfolio Management: Maintain a profitable book of business by analyzing trends, identifying opportunities, and implementing corrective actions when needed.
- Agency Relationships: Build and maintain strong relationships with agency partners to drive retention and identify cross-sell opportunities.
- Mentorship & Leadership: Provide guidance, coaching, and technical support to less experienced underwriters; serve as a subject matter expert within the team.
- Collaboration: Partner with internal teams including Risk Control, Claims, Actuarial, and Product to deliver comprehensive solutions to clients.
- Compliance & Documentation: Ensure underwriting decisions are well-documented and compliant with regulatory and internal standards.
- Continuous Improvement: Contribute to process enhancements, system improvements, and strategic initiatives within the underwriting function.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in insurance, risk management, finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably in middle market.
- Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and pricing strategies.
- Proven ability to manage complex accounts and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
- Proficiency in underwriting systems and tools; experience with data-driven decision-making.
- Professional designations (e.g., CPCU, AU, ARM) preferred.
