Pension Actuary
Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Public Pension Actuary to support the financial sustainability and effective management of our public retirement systems. This role is responsible for conducting actuarial valuations, analyzing pension plan experience, projecting liabilities, and advising stakeholders on funding, risk, and policy decisions. The ideal candidate will have experience in pension actuarial work, strong quantitative skills, and the ability to communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform annual actuarial valuations and experience studies for public pension plans.
Develop long-term forecasts of plan liabilities, cash flows, and funded status.
Monitor and analyze plan experience relative to assumptions (e.g., mortality, retirement, turnover).
Assist in setting and reviewing actuarial assumptions in compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Prepare actuarial reports, presentations, and briefings for pension boards, government officials, and other stakeholders.
Provide actuarial input on plan design changes, funding strategies, and legislative proposals.
Collaborate with finance, legal, and investment staff to support holistic pension management.
Stay current on actuarial standards, GASB reporting requirements, and public pension trends.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or a related field.
Associate or Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (ASA or FSA) or equivalent designation (e.g., MAAA, EA).
3 - 15+ years of experience working in pension actuarial services, preferably with public plans.
Strong proficiency in actuarial software and tools (e.g., Excel, ProVal, R, Python).
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred:
Experience with governmental pension systems and GASB standards.
Understanding of relevant pension legislation and public finance principles.
Ability to present technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
