Senior Manager, Accounting and Financial Reporting - Insurance
About the Role
A leading insurance and financial services organization is seeking an experienced Senior Manager, Financial Reporting & Accounting to lead statutory accounting and reporting activities across insurance and reinsurance operations.
This individual will be responsible for ensuring accurate statutory accounting and financial reporting, overseeing the close process for insurance-related activities, maintaining compliance with statutory accounting requirements, and partnering with senior leadership on technical accounting matters. The role will also provide leadership to a small accounting team while collaborating with offshore resources.
Responsibilities
- Lead the month-end and quarter-end close processes related to insurance and reinsurance accounting activities.
- Review and approve journal entries, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting policies.
- Oversee balance sheet reconciliations and investigate reconciling items as needed.
- Maintain strong internal controls over accounting and financial reporting processes.
- Serve as the accounting and reporting lead for various insurance entities and ensure accurate financial statement reporting.
- Manage statutory accounting and reporting requirements for U.S. insurance operations and select international insurance entities.
- Coordinate with external auditors and regulators and manage audit requests.
- Prepare and review statutory financial statement disclosures and supporting schedules.
- Research and document technical accounting conclusions related to insurance and reinsurance transactions.
- Analyze and account for complex insurance transactions, including premium accounting, reserves, and ceded/assumed reinsurance arrangements.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes through automation, standardization, and reporting enhancements.
- Partner closely with Actuarial, FP&A, Tax, Treasury, Legal, and Accounting Policy teams.
- Mentor and develop accounting staff while managing workloads and ensuring timely deliverables.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA preferred.
- 7+ years of insurance accounting experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and insurance statutory reporting.
- Experience preparing and reviewing Annual Statement filings.
- Deep understanding of life insurance, annuity, and reinsurance accounting.
- Experience managing portions of the general ledger close process, including journal entries and reconciliations.
- Strong knowledge of internal controls, audit support, and financial reporting.
- Experience working directly with internal and external auditors.
- Ability to research and apply accounting guidance to complex transactions.
- Knowledge of both GAAP and statutory reporting frameworks.
- Experience managing teams and collaborating across multiple stakeholders.
- Strong communication and project management skills.
- Track record of driving process improvements, automation initiatives, and operational efficiencies.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with accounting, finance, actuarial, tax, treasury, and legal teams.

- Experience within a life insurance, annuity, or reinsurance organization.
- Exposure to international insurance entities and related statutory reporting requirements.
- Prior leadership experience managing both domestic and offshore accounting resources.
- Experience supporting regulatory filings, audits, and large-scale accounting initiatives.
