A growing Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) organization is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting and financial operations function. This role offers the opportunity to partner closely with operational leaders, drive process improvements, and build scalable financial infrastructure to support continued growth. Position Overview

The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance initiatives. This individual will serve as a strategic leader within the organization, providing financial insights to key stakeholders while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information. The ideal candidate will bring strong AEC industry experience, a deep understanding of project accounting and revenue recognition, and a proven ability to develop high-performing teams and scalable processes.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead all day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, project accounting, invoicing, reconciliations, and cash management.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and internal accounting policies.
  • Manage project accounting activities, including WIP reporting, revenue recognition, project accruals, and financial performance analysis.
  • Partner with budget owners and operational leaders to provide meaningful financial insights and support decision-making.
  • Maintain, strengthen, and improve internal controls and financial governance procedures.
  • Coordinate annual audits and work closely with external accounting and tax advisors.
  • Monitor debt obligations, cash flow, and financial risk management initiatives.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and process improvements to support organizational growth.
  • Optimize ERP systems and financial reporting tools to improve operational efficiency and data accuracy.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to enhance reporting capabilities, forecasting processes, and business intelligence initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts throughout the accounting function, leveraging technology and automation where appropriate.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • CPA designation preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Experience overseeing core accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, project accounting, invoicing, and reconciliations.
  • Prior experience managing audits and partnering with external tax advisors.
  • Proven expertise within the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC), or project-based services environment.
  • Strong understanding of WIP schedules, revenue recognition, project accruals, and project financial management.
  • Experience working with ERP systems in an AEC environment; Deltek Vision, Ajera, or Vantagepoint experience is highly preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex modeling and reporting capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, lead teams, and improve processes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills.

Location

This position follows a hybrid work schedule, with three days per week in-office and two days remote. Occasional travel may be required to support additional office locations and business operations.
