Controller
Selby Jennings is partnered with a leading Civil Engineering firm in Salt Lake City that is looking to expand their Finance & Operations team. The CFO is currently looking to bring on a Controller to play a key role in shaping the financial strategy & operations of a rapidly expanding civil engineering consultancy.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the preparation of financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and internal reports.
- Review project-level financials for accuracy and completeness.
- Create dashboards and performance metrics to inform executive decision-making.
- Ensure adherence to accounting standards, tax laws, and internal policies.
- Supervise core functions including billing, payroll, accounts payable, and general ledger activity.
- Monitor project profitability, cash flow, and work-in-progress to identify trends and risks.
- Oversee client billing processes, ensuring proper documentation and change order tracking.
- Implement and refine procedures to improve consistency and efficiency.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop financial plans aligned with long-term business goals.
- Provide input on pricing strategies, contract terms, and overhead recovery.
- Recommend enhancements to financial systems and internal controls.
- Support business development through financial modeling and analysis.
- Maintain accurate records of company assets, including vehicles, equipment, and technology.
- Manage relationships with banks, auditors, and insurance providers.
- Ensure compliance with licensing, regulatory, and corporate requirements.
- Lead and mentor accounting team members, including mid-level and junior staff.
- Assign tasks, review work, and provide coaching to support professional growth.
- Foster a culture of precision, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; advanced credentials (CPA/CMA) preferred.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role.
- Strong grasp of accounting principles, financial reporting, and operational controls.
- Skilled in both tactical financial management and strategic planning.
- Proficient in ERP/accounting systems and advanced Excel modeling.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and leadership capabilities.
- Experience in industries such as engineering, construction, or land development is highly desirable.
