Position Overview

The Plant Controller serves as the senior finance leader for a high-volume medical manufacturing facility, providing financial oversight, operational analysis, and strategic support to plant leadership. This individual will be responsible for managing all plant accounting functions, driving cost improvement initiatives, overseeing inventory controls, and ensuring accurate financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and company policies.

The ideal candidate combines strong manufacturing accounting expertise with a hands-on approach to partnering with operations, supply chain, quality, and engineering teams to improve profitability, productivity, and financial performance.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Lead all accounting and finance activities for the manufacturing facility.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and operational reports.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Maintain compliance with U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and corporate accounting policies.
  • Support external audits, internal audits, and regulatory inspections as required.

Cost Accounting & Inventory Management

  • Oversee standard costing, cost rollups, BOM accuracy, and product cost analysis.
  • Analyze manufacturing variances including labor, material, overhead, scrap, and production efficiencies.
  • Monitor inventory valuation, cycle counting programs, and physical inventory processes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve inventory turns and reduce obsolescence.
  • Ensure accurate inventory accounting across raw materials, WIP, and finished goods.

Operational Finance Partnership

  • Act as a strategic business partner to the Plant Manager and leadership team.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Develop KPIs and dashboards to monitor operational performance.
  • Support capital expenditure planning, ROI analysis, and investment evaluations.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and Lean manufacturing initiatives.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and regular forecasting activities.
  • Analyze actual results against budget and forecast, providing actionable recommendations.
  • Evaluate manufacturing capacity, labor utilization, and cost structure to support long-term planning.
  • Prepare financial models and scenario analyses to support decision-making.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Maintain strong internal controls over inventory, fixed assets, and manufacturing transactions.
  • Ensure compliance with SOX controls and corporate financial procedures, where applicable.
  • Support regulatory requirements associated with the medical device manufacturing industry, including FDA-regulated environments.
  • Identify and mitigate financial and operational risks.

Leadership

  • Manage and develop plant accounting and finance personnel.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate effectively with Corporate Finance, Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, and Engineering leaders.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience within a manufacturing environment.
  • 3+ years of experience in a Plant Controller, Manufacturing Controller, Cost Accounting Manager, or similar leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of cost accounting principles and manufacturing financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting inventory-intensive operations.
  • Advanced proficiency with ERP systems and Excel.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.

Preferred

  • CPA, CMA, or MBA designation.
  • Experience within medical device, pharmaceutical, life sciences, or highly regulated manufacturing industries.
  • Knowledge of FDA-regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar ERP platforms.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies.
