Head of Accounting

An international financial services business is seeking a Head of Accounting to oversee its Belgian accounting operations and lead a team responsible for financial control, statutory reporting, and accounting governance.

Reporting directly to the Finance Director, this role sits within the finance leadership team and plays a critical part in ensuring robust financial processes, regulatory compliance, and high-quality financial reporting across the organisation. The position offers significant exposure to senior management and the opportunity to contribute to strategic finance initiatives, systems improvements, and business growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting and reporting professionals
• Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Ensure compliance with IFRS and Belgian GAAP requirements
• Manage statutory accounts, regulatory filings, and tax reporting obligations
• Review balance sheet reconciliations and ensure strong control over financial processes
• Partner closely with FP&A, Treasury, Risk, and Compliance teams on cross-functional initiatives
• Coordinate external audits and act as the primary contact for auditors and regulators
• Monitor and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and governance frameworks
• Support finance transformation projects, including process automation and systems optimisation
• Provide financial insight and recommendations to senior leadership on accounting and control matters

Candidate Profile

Required Experience

• Strong background in financial accounting and statutory reporting
• Proven experience leading and developing accounting teams
• Extensive knowledge of IFRS and local Belgian accounting requirements
• Experience managing audit processes and regulatory reporting obligations
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
• Ability to operate effectively within a complex, multi-entity environment
• Fluent English language skills

Preferred Experience

• Big Four audit or advisory background
• Experience within financial services, asset management, leasing, lending, or insurance environments
• Exposure to multinational or cross-border finance structures
• Experience leading accounting process improvement or finance transformation initiatives
• Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements in a regulated industry
• French and/or Dutch language skills would be advantageous
• Experience working with ERP systems and finance automation tools
