Overview
The Portfolio Manager, Healthcare Banking is responsible for the ongoing credit management, risk oversight, and performance of a complex portfolio of healthcare commercial banking relationships. This role serves as a senior credit partner to Relationship Managers, Underwriting, and Credit Leadership, with responsibility for risk rating integrity, portfolio quality, and regulatory compliance.
The position focuses on post‑origination portfolio management across healthcare services, provider groups, and sponsor‑backed platforms, and requires seasoned judgment in navigating reimbursement dynamics, regulatory risk, and complex capital structures.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage a portfolio of complex healthcare relationships, including leveraged and sponsor‑backed credits
* Exercise independent judgment in assessing borrower performance, liquidity, leverage, and covenant compliance
* Proactively identify emerging credit risks and recommend mitigation strategies, restructurings, or escalations as needed
* Maintain and defend risk ratings through credit cycles, audits, and regulatory exams
* Serve as a subject matter expert on healthcare credit risk within the broader commercial bank
Credit Reviews, Renewals, and Amendments
* Lead preparation and approval of annual credit reviews and portfolio risk assessments
* Oversee renewals, restructurings, amendments, waivers, and extensions
* Review and challenge underwriting assumptions and deal structures
* Partner with Credit Officers and Underwriting to ensure transactions align with credit policy and risk appetite
* Provide guidance on covenant frameworks, pricing for risk, and structural protections
Relationship and Internal Leadership
* Act as senior credit partner to Healthcare Relationship Managers
* Participate in client meetings to support complex credit discussions, renewals, or risk matters
* Advise RMs on credit strategy, policy interpretation, and portfolio optimization
* Mentor junior Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts
* Serve as a point of escalation for portfolio or credit issues within the Healthcare vertical
Portfolio Strategy and Reporting
* Monitor portfolio level exposure, concentrations, and healthcare subsector trends
* Contribute to portfolio stress testing, risk reporting, and regulatory initiatives
* Support internal exams, audits, and executive level portfolio reviews
* Provide insight into healthcare market developments and their credit implications
Healthcare Coverage Focus
Coverage may include, but is not limited to:
* Healthcare services and operator platforms
* Physician practice management and MSOs
* Behavioral health, substance use disorder, and mental health providers
* Post‑acute care, senior living, and long term care providers
* Sponsor‑backed healthcare credits and leveraged structures
Experience navigating reimbursement cycles and regulatory complexity is critical.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field
* 8+ years of commercial banking, credit risk, or portfolio management experience
* Demonstrated experience managing complex commercial loan portfolios
* Strong understanding of healthcare financials, reimbursement dynamics, and regulatory risk
* Proven ability to independently assess credit risk and defend decisions
* Excellent written and verbal credit communication skills
