Head of SHS Actuarial & Underwriting
Position Overview:
A national insurance and financial services organization is seeking a strategic and experienced leader to oversee actuarial and underwriting functions for its Supplemental Health Solutions division. This role will be responsible for driving profitable growth across a diverse portfolio of products, including international travel medical, group voluntary benefits (accident, health, critical illness), fixed indemnity, life, and disability.
Reporting directly to the Chief Actuary, this position will play a key role in shaping product strategy, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting business development efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Program Oversight
- Provide leadership and strategic guidance to internal and external partners supporting global health programs.
- Serve as a key liaison for actuarial and underwriting functions related to international product lines.
Rating Methodology & Pricing Strategy
- Develop and document rating frameworks for new and renewal business to ensure sustainable profitability.
- Implement manual rate and factor review processes to support consistent pricing practices.
Underwriting Leadership
- Oversee underwriting operations for the SHS portfolio, including the development and refinement of rating tools and underwriting guidelines.
- Ensure adherence to established underwriting standards and manage updates as needed.
Market & Competitive Analysis
- Evaluate current pricing structures and underwriting criteria against market benchmarks.
- Identify opportunities for product and pricing enhancements based on market trends.
Product Development Collaboration
- Partner with product development teams to ensure sound risk assessment and pricing strategies for new offerings.
- Support the design and launch of products aligned with long-term growth and profitability goals.
Forecasting & Financial Planning
- Contribute to financial forecasting, budgeting, and capital planning efforts.
- Review renewal performance and provide insights for business segment reporting and future planning.
Business Development Support
- Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to evaluate and support new business opportunities.
- Provide actuarial input to secure profitable revenue streams and expand distribution channels.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Business, or a related field (required)
- ASA (FSA preferred) and MAAA
- 10+ years of experience in the insurance industry, preferably in health and travel
- Experience with life and disability products is a plus
