Position Overview

The Freight Trader will be responsible for originating, negotiating, and executing profitable freight and chartering strategies in the Panamax and/or Supramax segments, with a focus on the Asia Pacific market. This role involves close collaboration with the cargo trading teams to align freight positions with trading flows, ensuring competitive coverage and strong P&L delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute freight trading and chartering strategies within the Panamax and/or Supramax markets across Asia Pacific.
  • Source, negotiate, and conclude voyage and time charter contracts with ship owners, charterers, and operators.
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with owners, charterers, and brokers to enhance deal flow and market visibility.
  • Coordinate closely with cargo trading teams to align freight coverage with cargo opportunities.
  • Monitor market developments, freight trends, vessel positions, and cargo flows to identify trading opportunities.
  • Optimize vessel utilization and manage chartering risks effectively.
  • Oversee fixture execution and ensure compliance with contractual and operational requirements.
  • Maintain accurate fixture and performance records, market data, and intelligence reports.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in dry bulk freight trading or chartering (Panamax and/or Supramax).
  • Demonstrated track record of profitability in physical freight trading or chartering.
  • Strong understanding of dry bulk shipping routes, market dynamics, and regional cargo flows.
  • Established network of owners, charterers, and brokers across Asia Pacific.
  • Highly commercial, analytical, and results-oriented.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to perform in a fast-paced trading environment.

Preferred Background

  • Experience within a commodity trading house or ship operator.
  • Exposure to key regional trades such as coal, iron ore, minerals, and grains.
  • Familiarity with both spot and COA chartering strategies.
