About the Role
Our client is seeking a highly skilled Lead Field Underwriter to strengthen their Middle Market underwriting presence across the Western Pennsylvania region. This role is ideal for an experienced commercial underwriter who thrives on building broker relationships, driving profitable growth, and mentoring others.
As a Lead Field Underwriter, you will serve as a key market-facing representative-responsible for evaluating complex risks, executing on strategic underwriting initiatives, and contributing to regional growth goals.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Portfolio Management
- Assess, select, and price middle market commercial risks across targeted industry segments, ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
- Analyze financial statements, loss histories, and exposure details to determine appropriate terms and conditions.
- Manage a diverse renewal and new business portfolio with a focus on long-term, profitable account retention.
- Identify opportunities for product, coverage, or pricing enhancements to improve competitiveness in the region.
Market-Facing & Business Development
- Strengthen and expand distribution relationships with key agencies and brokers in Western Pennsylvania.
- Represent our client in meetings, presentations, and joint business planning sessions with appointed agencies.
- Actively contribute to territory strategies that drive sustainable growth and market differentiation.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as a mentor and technical resource for underwriters and associates within the region.
- Collaborate closely with underwriting leadership, claims, risk control, and product teams to execute strategic initiatives.
- Support training and development initiatives to elevate underwriting acumen and consistency across the team.
- Participate in complex account reviews and contribute expertise to improve overall underwriting execution.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably in Middle Market or multiline underwriting.
- Strong knowledge of property and casualty coverages, risk evaluation techniques, and pricing methodologies.
- Demonstrated success managing agency relationships within a field-based underwriting role.
- Proven analytical skills and the ability to make sound, data-driven decisions.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation abilities.
- Ability to travel within the Western Pennsylvania territory.
