Director of Technology
Job Title: Director of Technology
Compensation: Total compensation up to 400k (inclusive of base and bonus)
Work Model: 5x a week in office, Manhattan based
Summary: An elite, boutique investment management firm focused on asset based credit is seeking a Director of Technology to join their growing team. The role reports into the Founder & Chief Investment Officer and will work closely with the Director of Enterprise Intelligence. You will be responsible for tech infrastructure, cybersecurity, IT ops, and tech compliance. It is a hands-on leadership role at a lean, high-performing private credit firm with a custom platform build underway.
Responsibilities:
- Own the technical architecture and infrastructure, including the AWS environment, PostgreSQL database, compute, storage, networking, and system performance.
Ensure infrastructure is secure, scalable, reliable, and cost-optimized, in alignment with the platform's core design principles.
Serve as a strong sounding board and technical counterpart to the Lead Developer - actively engaging on architectural decisions, pushing back where warranted, and helping the developer think through trade-offs in system design, performance, and scalability.
Oversee the design and maintenance of data pipelines that consolidate information from across the firm and from external sources, including market data, bank feeds, collateral tapes, fund admin data, and third-party integrations.
Guide database organization and configuration to ensure complex queries and reporting needs are met reliably - including indexing strategy, query performance, connection management, and database tuning.
Partner with the Director of Enterprise Intelligence on the DuckDB-to-PostgreSQL data pipeline, and with the Director of Asset Management on the DuckDB staging environment and collateral data ingestion workflows, contributing expertise on performance, structural validation, ingestion efficiency, and system-level reliability.
Advise on architectural trade-offs across system design decisions, bringing well-reasoned, fact-based perspective informed by broad industry knowledge.
Own ETL/ELT delivery and the maintenance of ingestion mechanisms, structural validation tools, and automated data pipelines.
Maintain documentation standards, syntax/versioning conventions, and architectural linkage rules across platform domains.
Data Governance and Security
Lead data governance practices including access controls, role-based permissions, data lineage, and audit trail standards.
Implement and maintain data security policies and controls in coordination with the Head of Compliance, ensuring the firm's systems, pipelines, and database environment meet regulatory requirements and remain audit-ready under applicable SEC frameworks.
Define and enforce structural and operational data standards at the infrastructure level; coordinate with the Director of Enterprise Intelligence, who owns validation rules, quality definitions, and logical data standards across enterprise domains.
IT Operations
Oversee all day-to-day IT operations, including the service desk, onboarding and offboarding workflows, IT asset management, and end-user support across New York, London, and any future office locations.
Manage the on-site IT Associate, who handles first-line support and day-to-day hardware and facilities technology.
Ensure the firm's end-user computing environment is modern, well-managed, and delivers a high-quality experience for all staff.
Cybersecurity
Own the firm's cybersecurity strategy, program, and posture, ensuring robust protection of the firm's systems, data, and infrastructure.
Oversee cybersecurity operations, including endpoint protection, identity and access management, vulnerability management, threat detection, BCP/DR, and incident response.
Lead technology risk management, ensuring risks are identified, assessed, and managed in line with the firm's risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
MSP and Vendor Management
Serve as the primary relationship owner for the firm's managed service provider (MSP), ensuring strong accountability and performance across outsourced infrastructure and security services.
Manage contract negotiations, vendor governance, and escalation management across key technology vendors and service providers.
Requirements:
MS or PhD in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field with 10+ years of experience; or a BA/BS in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field with 15+ years of experience.
Demonstrated background in data engineering and/or data architecture.
Technical Skills
Hands-on experience with AWS in a production environment (required) and PostgreSQL in a production database context (required).
Data engineering expertise: pipeline design and maintenance, ETL/ELT frameworks, ingestion tooling, and structural validation.
Strong working knowledge of database engineering: performance tuning, indexing, query optimization, and connection management - with the ability to advise on technical architecture while collaborating with business-led logical data models.
Data governance and security experience, including access controls, role-based permissions, and regulatory compliance; experience with SEC regulations preferred.
Data infrastructure engineering experience with the versatility to operate as a data engineer while also handling IT- and systems-oriented responsibilities.
Broad industry knowledge that enables fact-based, well-reasoned input on system design choices and architectural trade-offs.
Strong command of cybersecurity frameworks, endpoint management (EDR, MDM), identity and access management, and incident response.
Interpersonal and Leadership
High emotional intelligence - the ability to read a room, build trust across a diverse group of colleagues, navigate disagreement without creating friction, and bring out the best in people with different working styles and areas of expertise.
Strong communication skills across all levels: able to translate technical complexity for non-technical colleagues and engage substantively with those who are technically fluent.
Comfortable with ambiguity and with a firm that is actively evolving - processes, roles, and tools are being built in real time, and the right person will find that energizing rather than unsettling.
Willingness to teach and share knowledge - particularly with colleagues who are building technical skills alongside their business roles - without making expertise feel like a gatekeeping function.
Experience in a small or mid-sized firm where pragmatism and adaptability matter as much as technical depth.
