Commercial Underwriting Manager
Our client is a respected regional multiline insurance carrier seeking an experienced Commercial Insurance Underwriting Manager to lead underwriting operations across the Mid‑Atlantic region. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely while supporting and collaborating with our Richmond, VA office. The ideal candidate is a strong technical underwriter and people leader who excels at building agency relationships, driving profitable growth, and developing underwriting talent.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of commercial underwriters, ensuring high-quality risk evaluation and adherence to underwriting guidelines.
- Manage referral activity, risk selection, authority levels, pricing, and portfolio performance for the regional commercial book.
- Partner with regional agency distribution teams to strengthen relationships and drive profitable new business opportunities.
- Monitor underwriting results, trends, and market conditions; recommend adjustments to strategy, appetite, and pricing.
- Collaborate with product, actuarial, claims, and operations to support continuous improvement and product innovation.
- Ensure compliance, consistency, and operational efficiency across underwriting workflows.
- Represent underwriting leadership in agency meetings, field visits, and key account discussions as needed.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of commercial P&C underwriting experience; prior leadership or mentoring experience strongly preferred.
- Deep technical knowledge across core commercial lines (e.g., property, GL, workers comp, auto, umbrella).
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to build and sustain strong agency relationships.
- Experience with regional carriers or independent agency distribution is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree required; industry designations (CPCU, AU, ARM) preferred.
This role offers remote flexibility within the Mid‑Atlantic territory (MD, VA, NC, SC, or eastern PA) with periodic travel to the Richmond office and agency locations.
