Position Summary:

The Head Staff Actuary will lead actuarial strategy and operations for commercial health insurance products, with a primary focus on level-funded, stop-loss, and self-funded business segments. This role is responsible for pricing, reserving, risk management, and financial forecasting to ensure profitability and compliance. The ideal candidate will combine deep actuarial expertise with strong leadership and business acumen to support growth and innovation in the commercial market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership:

    • Develop and execute actuarial strategies for level-funded, stop-loss, and self-funded products.
    • Partner with executive leadership to align actuarial functions with organizational goals and market opportunities.
  • Pricing & Underwriting Support:

    • Oversee development of pricing models and rating methodologies for commercial products.
    • Provide actuarial support for underwriting decisions and risk assessments.
  • Financial Analysis & Forecasting:

    • Monitor financial performance, reserves, and risk exposure; deliver actionable insights to leadership.
    • Prepare projections and scenario analyses to support strategic planning and product development.
  • Regulatory Compliance:

    • Ensure adherence to state and federal regulations for commercial health insurance products.
    • Support actuarial filings and respond to regulatory inquiries.
  • Leadership & Team Development:

    • Mentor and develop actuarial staff; foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including finance, product, and operations.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field; ASA or FSA designation required.
  • Experience:

    • 8+ years of actuarial experience in commercial health insurance, with expertise in level-funded, stop-loss, and self-funded products.
    • Proven leadership experience in a health plan, consulting, or insurance environment.
  • Skills:

    • Strong proficiency in actuarial software and data analytics tools (Excel, SQL, R, Python).
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
    • Ability to translate complex actuarial concepts into actionable business strategies.

  • Experience in product development and pricing for innovative commercial solutions.
  • Familiarity with predictive modeling and automation in actuarial processes.
