A growing organization in the health benefits industry is seeking a Medical Underwriting Manager to lead a team of underwriting professionals and oversee small group underwriting operations. Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of underwriting professionals
- Establish performance expectations, productivity goals, and quality standards
- Conduct performance reviews, mentoring, and ongoing training initiatives
- Manage team workflow and ensure service-level commitments are met
- Provide guidance on complex underwriting decisions and escalated cases
- Serve as a key resource and subject matter expert for underwriting operations
Underwriting Operations
- Oversee underwriting activities for new business, renewals, policy changes, and eligibility reviews
- Review and approve complex risk assessments and underwriting recommendations
- Ensure underwriting decisions align with company guidelines and risk tolerance
- Support relationships with brokers, consultants, and distribution partners
- Monitor underwriting quality and consistency across the team
Process Improvement & Strategy
- Develop and maintain underwriting policies, procedures, and best practices
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow efficiency and operational performance
- Analyze underwriting results, trend data, and performance metrics
- Partner with leadership on strategic initiatives and operational enhancements
- Support compliance with regulatory and internal underwriting requirements
Qualifications
Required
- Experience in small group medical underwriting
- Prior leadership, supervisory, or people management experience
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
- Health insurance underwriting experience
- Experience working with brokers, agents, consultants, or carrier partners
- Background in process improvement, workflow optimization, or operational leadership
