About the Role
The Power Originator will be responsible for originating, structuring, and executing power transactions across any U.S. Independent System Operator (ISO) market, including but not limited to ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM, MISO, ERCOT, and SPP. This individual will develop commercial opportunities with utilities, power generators, retail energy providers, renewable developers, and large industrial or commercial clients. The ideal candidate combines strong market knowledge with a relationship-driven approach and the ability to execute complex structured transactions.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, originate, and negotiate bilateral power transactions across U.S. ISOs, spanning physical, financial, and structured products.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with generation asset owners, utilities, load-serving entities, banks, and large corporate offtakers.
- Collaborate with trading, analytics, risk, and legal teams to price, structure, and document deals.
- Monitor and interpret market fundamentals, transmission constraints, regulatory changes, and ISO-specific developments to drive commercial strategy.
- Build and maintain a deal pipeline aligned with the firm's risk appetite and market view.
- Support renewable and conventional asset development opportunities, including PPAs, tolling agreements, capacity products, and congestion transactions.
- Represent the company at relevant conferences, industry groups, and customer meetings.
- Ensure compliance with internal risk, credit, and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Energy Management, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
- 5-10+ years of experience in power origination, energy trading, structured products, or commercial energy market roles.
- Strong understanding of U.S. ISO market rules, settlement structures, congestion dynamics, and forward power markets.
- Proven track record of originating and closing power deals.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills.
- Ability to evaluate commercial risk, understand optionality, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Highly self-motivated, entrepreneurial mindset, and comfortable working in a fast-paced trading environment.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with renewable energy development or green attribute products (e.g., RECs).
- Understanding of hedging structures for renewable projects (fixed-shape, block, vPPA, P99 hedges, etc.).
- Familiarity with capacity markets, ancillary services, and congestion products.
