Backbone Network Engineer
A global trading and technology firm is seeking an experienced Backbone Network Engineer to support and enhance its high‑performance, low‑latency infrastructure. This role focuses on building reliable, scalable backbone networks that power mission‑critical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and optimize backbone architecture for low‑latency, high‑bandwidth connectivity
- Deploy and manage routing and optical transport hardware
- Build efficient routing paths between data centers and external venues
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve complex network issues
- Support capacity planning and network scaling efforts
- Collaborate with global engineering and infrastructure teams
- Maintain comprehensive documentation and operational standards
Qualifications
- 5+ years of network engineering experience, preferably in backbone or large‑scale environments
- Strong knowledge of BGP, IS‑IS, MPLS, PIM, and Segment Routing
- Experience with routers, switches, and DWDM/optical networking technologies
- Strong troubleshooting skills across routing and packet‑level analysis
- Experience with automation and scripting (Python, Bash, Ansible)
- Excellent problem‑solving and communication skills
Work Model
Hybrid role, requiring 3-4 days onsite per week in Chicago
